Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development — central to every aspect of life at Edgewood Academy.

SMSC represents the Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development of pupils and is central to all aspects of life at Edgewood Academy. In our SEMH setting, SMSC is also closely linked to pupils' emotional wellbeing, self-regulation, relationships, and readiness to learn.

Our Approach

A trauma-informed, relational approach

At Edgewood Academy, we recognise that many of our pupils have experienced barriers to learning, including social, emotional and mental health needs. Because of this, SMSC is delivered through a trauma-informed, relational approach that prioritises safety, trust, emotional regulation, and positive relationships. We aim to help pupils develop confidence, resilience, empathy and a sense of belonging so they can succeed both in school and in life beyond it.

SMSC is embedded across the curriculum, therapeutic interventions, pastoral support, outdoor learning, enrichment activities, and every interaction throughout the school day. We believe that every moment is an opportunity for personal development and healing.

Spiritual Development

  • providing pupils with safe opportunities to explore their own beliefs, values and identity, including (where appropriate) religious understanding, and how these shape their lives and choices

  • supporting pupils to understand and express emotions, developing emotional literacy and healthy coping strategies

  • creating a nurturing environment where pupils feel safe, valued, and able to grow emotionally and socially

  • helping pupils to reflect on their experiences, build self-awareness, and develop a sense of purpose and hope

  • encouraging curiosity, imagination and creativity through learning, play, arts and therapeutic activities

  • promoting moments of calm, reflection and mindfulness to support emotional regulation and wellbeing

Moral Development

  • supporting pupils to understand right and wrong in a clear, consistent and developmentally appropriate way

  • helping pupils to recognise the impact of their behaviour on themselves and others, including within relationships and communities

  • using restorative and relational approaches to support reflection, repair and rebuilding trust

  • providing a structured, predictable environment where expectations are clear and consistently reinforced

  • modelling fairness, empathy, respect and emotional regulation in all staff interactions

  • supporting pupils to develop accountability while maintaining dignity and a sense of self-worth

  • explicitly teaching and modelling social skills such as communication, cooperation, turn-taking, and conflict resolution

  • developing pupils' ability to form and maintain safe, positive relationships with peers and adults

  • fostering a strong sense of belonging, community and acceptance within the school environment

  • providing structured opportunities for teamwork, group learning, enrichment activities, and shared experiences

  • supporting pupils to develop independence, resilience and interdependence in preparation for adulthood

  • encouraging pupil voice through supported participation in decision-making, such as leadership roles or feedback forums

  • helping pupils engage positively with the wider community through carefully planned experiences and opportunities

Cultural Development

  • helping pupils explore and respect a range of cultural, religious and social backgrounds in a safe and accessible way

  • promoting inclusion, equality and respect for diversity within the school community and wider society
